Earthquake: Albert Whitlock began work as the head of the matte department at Universal in 1961.  In 1975 he, along with Frank Brendel & Glen Robinson created the visual effects for the film Earthquake.  This painting of a destroyed Los Angeles was one of over 70 created for the film.  Mattes like this one allowed filmmakers to destroy Los Angeles without actually destroying the locations that existed in reality.
